Welcome

This is your chance to be part of the best, most exciting council in the country

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the role of Strategic Director Environment and Leisure here at Southwark Council.

Welcome and thank you for your interest in the role of Strategic Director Environment and Leisure here at Southwark Council. Career opportunities such as this do not present themselves often. We believe this is a chance to be part of the best, most exciting council in the country, and to make a mark on quality of life in the most vibrant and dynamic of London boroughs.

Residents are front and centre of all that we undertake in Southwark and this commitment is manifested in consistently high resident satisfaction levels. The people of Southwark are proud of the borough and are excited by the regeneration that has transformed our profile in recent years. But it’s equally important to them that we get the day-to-day right – the practical things that make a difference to quality of life in the borough.

So there’s a dual emphasis to leading the Environment and Leisure Department. We want confidence and assurance in operational delivery and value for money – put simply: that our streets are clean; waste is collected; and that our public and leisure spaces are well looked after and well used by our residents. However, we also want our Director to influence and lead at a strategic level, representing Southwark’s interests at a city level, and working closely with our politicians to drive the place agenda for our borough. Getting the balance between the strategic and the operational will be key.

I’m really proud that we are playing our part in achieving a Fairer Future for residents, businesses and all those who call Southwark their home. Our organisational values are embedded in all that we undertake, and at all levels within the Council. It’s essential that whoever takes on this role subscribes to these values and can offer real-life examples of how they have demonstrated this approach in their career to date.

Southwark faces an extraordinary financial challenge. As a council we’ve taken out over £180m in savings in the last six years, whilst protecting our frontline services and delivering on our Council Plan promises. The success of our regeneration has given us strong growth and helped shield us from some of the pain of Government funding reductions, our residents lives are sadly not immune from the impact of the shortage of affordable homes across London, the national crisis in social care and the health provision or the major changes to welfare support.

It’s a key moment for the right person to join us. We’re fortunate to have great people working at the top of their game here in Southwark. We work as one council to deliver results and treat residents, colleagues and partners as valued members of our own families.
